Great Health Tip of the Day: National Apple Week

August 6, 2012

This week is National Apple Week, and there is no better way to celebrate than by including this fabulous fruit in your diet!

Apples are the perfect on-the-go snack, offering vitamins and minerals, fiber, and phytochemicals, all conveniently wrapped in an edible package. But be sure to eat the skin, this is where a good portion of an apple’s health benefits hide!

What makes apples so great?

  • Apples are naturally fat-free, sodium-free, and low in calories.
  • Most Americans do not get the recommended 25-35g of fiber each day. Eating one large apple a day will provide about 5g of fiber, helping you meet your fiber needs.
  • Diets high in the phytochemicals (like those found in apples) may reduce your risk for cancer, heart disease, and age-related eye diseases.

Did you know that there are nearly 2,500 apple varieties grown in the United States? Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Fuji and Granny Smith are available year round, but be sure to take advantage of the unique varieties available this time of year at your local Harmons.
