September is National Breakfast Month, a perfect time to talk about a healthy breakfast. Eating breakfast has been shown to be important for both weight control and for improved mental performance. Additionally, eating a healthy breakfast can help you to meet your nutrition needs for the day. However, many people feel that they don’t have time to eat breakfast. Cold cereal can be a quick and convenient breakfast, but how do you choose a healthy option? Here are some things to look for on the breakfast cereal label to help you to make a healthy choice:
- 100% whole grain
- 6 grams of sugar or less per serving
- 300 milligrams or less of sodium per serving
- Less than 1 gram of saturated fat per serving and no trans fat
Once you’ve made your cereal choice, improve your nutrition further by adding skim or 1% milk (or a low-fat milk substitute such as soy milk) and fruit.
