Amanda, Floral Designer
Now that you are familiar with a few of the other options as far as flowers go, let’s dive into what they are to a floral designer.
Flower arrangements have more to them than meets the eye. They are made up of lines, mass, fillers and focals. Each serve as a key part of shaping and bringing texture to your arrangement. Let’s put them in their groups . . .
Line - Lines are most commonly the height and take the eye up through the arrangement. It also gives the width and shape, creates the flow. Most often they are a center stem with blooms all around, however branches and sticks can also be used. From our garden we would use Bells of Ireland and Delphinium, but there are many others like Larkspere, Liatrus, Gladiolous, Stock and Snap Dragons.
Focal - The flower that draws most of your attention and screams “LOOK AT ME!”. Usually round and full faced, of those we have recently learned would be Ranunculus and Dahlia. There are also Sunflowers, Lilies, Roses, Carnations, Protea, Iris, Gerber Daisies – usually the larger more eye catching flower is the focal.
Mass/Fillers – Are flowers with multiple blooms to a stem and we usually use these to tie arrangements together and fill in spaces. From our garden we could pick Lisianthus, Alstromeria and Hypericum. These can also be Daisies, Pixie Carnations, Wax Flower, Statice, Babies Breath, Misty, Solid Aster, Queen Anne’s Lace, and many many more.
Greenery- There are limitless types of greenery and Harmons uses a wide variety. The more common are Leather Leaf, Salal (Lemon Leaf), Murtle, and Tree Fern. We also use many of the more dramatic greens as well such as Seeded Eucalyptus, Boxwood, Bear and Lily Grass, Flax, Ti Leaf, Aspidistra, Honey Bracelet, oh the list goes on and on.
Knowledge of flowers is a start but it’s just that, a start. There are lots of steps to creating a masterpiece. Knowledge is first and now let’s pick a container. There are a few other key ingredients you’ll need when using a container other than a vase, so until we go over those I am going to start us off with a classic glass vase arrangement. Get your vase picked out and next time plan on putting this knowledge to work as we are going to “Play with flowers!”
