The Floral Design Center is in all-out holiday design and arranging mode! Valentine’s Day is by far the busiest time of year for floral designers – extremely crazy, but a ton of fun at the same time. With orders pouring in online and over the phone, it is important to get a head start and be completely ready for the rush that happens in the couple days before the holiday. Not only are we preparing and organizing for the delivery orders, we also are making all the same great arrangements available for pick up in the stores. We have an entire crew of extra helpers to prepare vases and containers, process incoming flowers and greens, and much more. Spending time with great people, playing with beautiful flowers, and creating something you know will make someone happy – doesn’t get much better than that.

Checking to make sure all the incoming flowers are accounted for before being put in the coolers for processing

Don’t wait until the last minute and panic about your Valentine’s gift!
Order now
and don’t stress over the weekend. If you do reach panic mode Monday night (or Tuesday evening), don’t worry, we will have you covered in the store with last minute arrangements and gifts. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Fall, the season that excites the senses!

Leaves changing colors, crisp cool air bringing the threat of snow, ovens baking away with sweets, meats and treats, Grandma’s perfume, and fires in the fireplace. What a fabulous time of year!

November brings the month of thanks when families get together and enjoy all the little things on a regular day we tend to overlook.

It’s time to start gathering your ideas on how to brighten and decorate your family’s table on the great day of thanks. Will you have a float made by grandkids, a cornucopia filled with fruits a plenty, or a candle lit floral centerpiece? There are so many ways to spice up your table for this special day. Try mixing it up using flowers, fruit and fancy greenery to fill a cornucopia, or go simple with a short vase of fall mums and a few branches of colored leaves from outside. To bring a little ease to those who prefer to make their own arrangements, Harmons floral departments have bouquets that are colored specifically for the season and are ready to take home and arrange. However, if you are already overwhelmed with all the things on your To-Do list, the designers at Harmons Floral will be busy creating and delivering festive décor and we’ll be happy to help check the centerpiece off your list.

HAPPY MONTH OF THANKS!!!!!

“Here comes the bride, all dressed in white.”

Next step . . . More Knowledge

Now that you are familiar with a few of the other options as far as flowers go, let’s dive into what they are to a floral designer.

Flower arrangements have more to them than meets the eye.  They are made up of lines, mass, fillers and focals.  Each serve as a key part of shaping and bringing texture to your arrangement. Let’s put them in their groups . . .

Line -  Lines are most commonly the height and take the eye up through the arrangement. It also gives the width and shape, creates the flow. Most often they are a center stem with blooms all around, however branches and sticks can also be used. From our garden we would use Bells of Ireland and Delphinium, but there are many others like Larkspere, Liatrus, Gladiolous, Stock and Snap Dragons.

Focal - The flower that draws most of your attention and screams “LOOK AT ME!”. Usually round and full faced, of those we have recently learned would be Ranunculus and Dahlia. There are also Sunflowers, Lilies, Roses, Carnations, Protea, Iris, Gerber Daisies – usually the larger more eye catching flower is the focal.

Mass/Fillers – Are flowers with multiple blooms to a stem and we usually use these to tie arrangements together and fill in spaces. From our garden we could pick Lisianthus, Alstromeria and Hypericum. These can also be Daisies, Pixie Carnations, Wax Flower, Statice, Babies Breath, Misty, Solid Aster, Queen Anne’s Lace, and many many more.

Greenery- There are limitless types of greenery and Harmons uses a wide variety. The more common are Leather Leaf, Salal (Lemon Leaf), Murtle, and Tree Fern. We also use many of the more dramatic greens as well such as Seeded Eucalyptus, Boxwood, Bear and Lily Grass, Flax, Ti Leaf, Aspidistra, Honey Bracelet, oh the list goes on and on.

Knowledge of flowers is a start but it’s just that, a start. There are lots of steps to creating a  masterpiece. Knowledge is first and now let’s pick a container. There are a few other key ingredients you’ll need when using a container other than a vase, so until we go over those I am going to start us off with a classic glass vase arrangement. Get your vase picked out and next time plan on putting this knowledge to work as we are going to “Play with flowers!”

Ranunculus

It’s finally starting to look like spring outside, so more commonly you will see some of the flowers that are in our virtual garden in your own. Back through the white picket fence we go and on to the Ranunculus. When fully bloomed it looks much like a poppy and closed has the appearance of a rose with shorter petals. A very happy and whimsical flower. They grow in vibrant reds, bright yellows, vivid orange, baby pinks and the always peaceful white. Ready for the meaning? (LISTEN UP GENTLEMEN) “You are attractive!”

Lisianthus

Being in the whimsical side of our garden we come upon Lisianthus. Also a very delicate flower with thin petals similar to a rose, but in my opinion more elegant. They have fun little blooms on multiple stems with wavy petals and grow in pinks, purples, creme, green and white. Lisiantus illuminates beauty, and signifies appreciation.

With spring in the real garden comes Mother’s Day, so let’s move on to the celebration of Mothers.

“I’ll love you forever,
I’ll like you for always,
As long as I’m living
my Mommy you’ll be.”

May brings the flowers at the end of April’s showers and also the time to appreciate the woman who brought you into this world. Go back and remember some of the flowers in our garden and their meanings to create something special and unique to show your thanks. Arrangements can be made exactly as you choose with endless options for containers from ceramic to baskets to vases. When honoring your Mom pick something out that best fits her amazing qualities and reflects the endless love she has given you.  Be creative, ask questions, be a part of what you are giving. It makes it mean that much more!

Oh and PS to my Mom, thanks for all you do and are! I’m still trying to figure out where my creative side came from however! (Just kidding)

Dahlia

Another beautiful day in the blooming garden and still so much to see.

We are going to first stop at the Dahlia, a full and lush flower that looks like the main on a lion with numerous petals, in colors from white to pink and yellows to purples. I even see a few variegated, one color fading into another. Dahlias represent elegance and dignity.

Hypericum

Not all the flowers around us are big blooming blossoms. This takes us to Hypericum, a long tree like stem with little branched off clusters of shiny little berries and green leaves. Hypericum is also known as Coffee Bean and comes in many colors from apple green, salmony peach to dark brown and bright red. Unsure of a meaning, but they have so much character!

The trip through the garden will be short from here on out. We will check in and learn about a few new flowers each time but there are so many other things to talk about besides flower types, so for now we’ll move on.

Will you please go to the dance with me? Check “Yes” or “No”. Continue Reading »

Exploring with a Designer

WOW! How lucky I am to be able to share with you everything I know. (It shouldn’t take long – just kidding.) Oh, “About flowers . . .” Now this is going to take some time, so luckily I have just that.  My name is Amanda and I am a Floral Designer at Harmons state of the art Floral Design Center in West Valley City. I’m so excited to be a part of expanding your floral knowledge, so let’s get started! We are going on a stroll through a garden, and while on this peaceful walk we will stop at a few different types of flowers and learn about them. Ready?

Alstromeria

After walking through the little white gate we first come upon Alstromeria, a long green stem with 4-5 small lily like blooms clumped at the top.
What bright colors of reds, yellows, oranges. Alstromeria is said to represent wealth, prosperity and fortune.

Delphinium

Moving on to the bright blue, lavender, and baby blue hues of the Delphinium. A tall stock with many small blooms that look like a fairy’s upside down skirt, from about the middle of its stem to the top. Delphinium is known to represent the fun and the big hearted!

Bells of Ireland

But not everything in this garden is a blooming flower, like the Bells of Ireland we just approached. A tall slender green with spaced clumps of almost oval shaped leaves that open long ways like a baby birds mouth. This greenery means good luck, gratitude and whimsy.

Well the sun is going down and it is time to leave the garden. But there are so many flowers we didn’t get to see. It is amazing the beauty in our world, the color, and the smells. The next time you want to send flowers to a loved one or someone special in your life, explore all your options. Harmons has amazing Floral Designers at our shop and you should feel free to pick their smarts when it comes to picking your flowers.
