Profile: Special Olympics Utah Athlete and Harmons Associate

March 6, 2012

Brett Banford has been a Dyno-Star basketball player for 19 years. His mom decided he should participate in Special Olympics Utah when he was 10 years old because he had so much energy. Together they recruited his school friends and started their very own Special Olympics Utah basketball team, the Dyno-Stars, a team that has been together since 1993.

Aside from his part-time bagging job at the Harmons in his neighborhood, Brett has a lot of fun watching TV, doing research, traveling, and hanging out with his family and his dog, Mister.

Being part of Special Olympics Utah has taught Brett confidence, team playing, physical fitness and how to interact with the media and the public. This comes in handy because his favorite Special Olympics Utah event so far has been the Law Enforcement Torch Run when he was on TV as a spokesperson.

Brett’s favorite sport is basketball, and he was excited to cheer on the Dyno-Stars Unified Sports Basketball Team when they went to the Special Olympics US National Competition in July 2010 and brought home the gold medal. But Brett isn’t in Special Olympics just for the sports; he loves the dancing too, and he is known for his hip-hop moves. Continue Reading »

18th Annual Special Olympics Utah Fundraiser and Frozen Food Month

February 27, 2012

It is time to celebrate Frozen Food Month and support Special Olympics Utah! We are proud to again be partnering with Special Olympics Utah during the month of March in participation of National Frozen Food Month. During this time each year we ask for the help of our vendors and customers in supporting this great organization and local athletes. There are many ways to get involved:

What do the icon colors represent? Well, besides the medal color and their direct connection to the Special Olympic games, each color represents a different value and lesson in how we should treat people with intellectual disabilities.

PURPLE – Stands for JUSTICE and reminds us to treat people with intellectual disabilities equally.
GREEN – Stand for FAITH, urging us to have faith that they can accomplish anything they set their hearts to.
GOLD – Stands for POWER and reminds us to empower them to succeed by offering our support and friendship.

Harmons strives to carry out these values by supporting Special Olympics Utah and employing incredible associates with intellectual disabilities.

A City Creek Quatrain

January 24, 2012

Friendly, helpful, enthusiastic and . . . . CREATIVE. Harmons associates are always coming up with clever ways to share their excitement about what they do, what they learn and what they are looking forward to. In a recent training class, an associate shared their feelings of anticipation for the new City Creek store, set to open February 15th, through this well-crafted poem.

It’s taken 4 years to get to this day,
through a lot of hard work, we’ve come a long way.
From a small market spot and a man with a dream,
look at us now, we’re here! Sweet 16!

We’ve put down roots in the heart of downtown,
you’ll leave with a smile and the things that you found.
For a shopping experience that’s just “not normal,”
It’s grocery refined, yet not too formal.

We value associates and exceed expectations,
Our customer service wins standing ovations.
We’re more than happy to show you the way,
with a “Hi! How can I help you today?”

Our goals are remarkable from our teams to our shelves,
folks would be disappointed going anywhere else.
A mix of the old, infused with the new,
It’s traditional, innovative, and all here for you!

So pardon our candor and slight tongue-in-cheek.
We’re not normal, we’re Harmons,
downtown City Creek!

Merry Christmas!
