Through the Gift for a Gift program, Harmons teams up with shoppers to support Utah Food Bank and Crossroads Urban Center to provide Thanksgiving dinner for deserving Utah families. Customers can donate $10 at our registers or donate online to purchase a turkey for another Utah family. All proceeds from the donations go directly to purchasing turkeys for the Utah Food Bank, which in turn distributes the turkeys to local food pantries including Crossroads Urban Center in Salt Lake City, Dixie Care & Share in St. George, and local food banks in Ogden and Orem. Since 1997, with the help of our customers, we've donated close to 70,000 turkeys and other Thanksgiving meal staples to food banks across the state. In 2011 alone, Harmons customers raised enough to donated more than 8,000 turkeys and meal staples to local Utah families. Crossroads Urban center reports the 2011 give away of 3,700 meals at the Indian Walk-in Center location is the largest in nearly 40 years.
Every year volunteers from Harmons, local businesses, churches, schools and community groups gather the day before Thanksgiving at the Indian Walk-in Center in downtown Salt Lake City to distribute the meals to local families during the annual Turkey Toss. In 2011, dozens of volunteers showed up to help move the food, hand out hot chocolate and gloves, sign in recipients and pass out the meals. The other share of the turkeys and food supplies are distributed in other areas of the state by the Utah Food Bank and Dixie Care & Share. Thank you to all the generous Harmons' customers for helping Utah families and to the hardworking volunteers for another amazing year.
