I’m a sucker for sauces! I can enjoy just about anything as long as it’s dressed in a delicious sauce or condiment. The right sauce can take something like say boring pasta and veggies into a memorable meal. However, sauces can also add a lot of extra calories, saturated fat and sodium. Our Dietitians Choice tag can help direct you to healthier options when choosing condiments, marinades, or prepared sauces from the aisles of our stores. If you have a little more time for food preparation, try your hand at one of these Harmons recipes:
Cashew miso sauce is great on roasted vegetables or as an alfredo sauce alternative. It’s packed with healthy fats from the cashews and is creamy as can be. The miso paste and nutritional yeast give it a satisfying umami flavor–the savory flavor found in meats, mushrooms, and pungent cheeses.
Tzatziki is a yogurt and cucumber based dip popular among Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. Pair it with grilled meats, gyros, or roasted veggies. It’s also a great appetizer dip with pita wedges, crackers, or crudités. This prepared Tzatziki is a favorite of our Harmons Dietitian team! Chef Lesli’s savory almond butter dip makes a unique veggie dip. It’s also great on noodles for an Asian inspired meal.
Pesto can be easily made by blending basil leaves, Parmesan cheese, olive oil, pine nuts, garlic, salt, and pepper. Think outside of the box and use pesto on sandwiches or in scrambled eggs. If you love pesto like I do, try this cilantro and almond version. Better yet, let our Chef Prepared Produce teams do the work for you!
Have you tried Bitchin’ Sauce Dip? This savory, vegan-friendly, almond-based sauce is delicious on sandwiches, burritos, bowls, or pretty much anything!
This garlic-ginger pumpkin seed recipe makes quite a lot, but it’s a wonderful thing to have on hand to dress salads, or top roasted veggies or cooked whole grains.
And last but not least, my all-time favorite sauce…Romesco! Romesco is a nutty, red pepper, and tomato based sauce so yummy on fish, poultry, roasted vegetables…the possibilities are endless! This simple sauce will make just about anything taste gourmet.
