December is National Pear Month, and it couldn’t be a better time to celebrate this glorious fruit than now.
Everyone knows the classic Christmas carol, “Twelve Days of Christmas.”
“On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me….a partridge in a pear tree.”
Now, we’re not suggesting you go out and find a partridge and an entire pear tree, but pears are the perfect gift for any fruit lover, whether in one of our amazing gift baskets or just to share in a homemade treat.

As a healthy snack, pears can’t be beat! Not only are they juicy and sweet, they’re a fantastic source of fiber and completely fat-, sodium-, and cholesterol-free. Because they’re so good for you, the American Heart Association has marked 10 varieties as Heart Check certified. Check out which varieties in this infographic!
But before biting into your delectable dishes or even just your pear, make sure it’s ripe with this quick test! When pears are ripe, they yield to gentle pressure on the neck. Where’s a pear’s neck? This video from USA Pears shows us exactly what that means!
But what are some tasty ways to incorporate pears into your diet? Start simple! Top your favorite yogurts or oatmeal with pears and honey, combine them with spinach and berries in smoothies, or pair them with nuts to use on top of salads. Or try one of the recipes below!
