At Harmons, food is our passion. Our focus is to make high-quality, local, and specialty items easy to get. And while we may be landlocked, that commitment absolutely extends to our seafood department. We are committed to providing fresh and delicious seafood to our shoppers. At the same time, we recognize our responsibility as a major seafood buyer to help ensure the sustainability of seafood for future generations. To that end, we have focused on two critical organizations that support ocean and fishery health.

First, is our seafood purveyor, Pacific Seafood. They place special importance on sustainability knowing that this protein source is important now and will be for the generations to come. Pacific Seafood is committed to working in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the eight U.S. Regional Fishery Management Councils, and individual states. The collaborations ensure that their fisheries remain robust and sustainable. Consequently, Pacific Seafood offers 34 Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified species and operates 20 MSC-certified sustainable facilities.

Additionally, Pacific Seafood maintains a strong aquaculture program. Responsible aquaculture is essential to meet the global demand for seafood while simultaneously preventing overfishing of wild fish stocks. Their steelhead trout and oyster farms produce Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) 4-Star certified products.

We partner with Monterey Bay Aquarium through their Seafood Watch to ensure that the seafood we sell meets their strict criteria. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a leader in the global sustainable seafood movement. Their Seafood Watch Program rates the sustainability of species to help educate buyers and consumers and supports a variety of sustainable aquaculture and wild fisheries programs around the world.

In our fresh seafood department, Harmons follows Seafood Watch guidelines and only sells products that get ratings of:

Green

The best choice with the most sustainable options

Yellow

A good alternative, although there may be some concerns.

Harmons does not sell products that get a rating of:

Red

Avoid because of serious concerns with farming or wild fishing practices

For all of these reasons, you can be sure that fresh seafood you purchase from Harmons is wild-caught or farmed in ways that do not harm the environment. Our seafood is sustainable, delicious, and nutritious. Health experts including Harmons own Registered Dietitians recommend eating seafood two times per week (or more) for brain and heart health. Now, you know your healthy food choices also support healthy oceans—a classic win-win!
