Long summer days with kids out of school means we go through snacks at my house at an alarming rate. As a mom, I know my kids want tasty snacks and as a dietitian, I want to make sure I am providing them with the fuel they need to stay active. I know with a little planning and preparation; we can achieve both delicious and nutritious. Win, win! Try these Harmons Dietitian and Chef created recipes with your crew this summer.
Peanut Butter Energy Bites
These bites can easily be made gluten free (or not) by switching out the pretzels. Not a fan of peanut butter? Try almond butter or cashew butter instead.
Peach Nice Cream
We all scream for “nice cream!” Turn frozen fruits into a delicious frozen treat. Check out this Harmons Dietitian blog for more nice cream and add in ideas.
Pineapple Mango Coconut Popsicles
Speaking of frozen treats, who doesn’t love a popsicle? Swap out artificially sweetened or high fructose corn syrup laden pops with something more nutritious, like 100% juice or pureed fruit.
Superhero Veggie Dip
Keep a fresh veggie tray on hand with a fun dip. Kids (and adults) are more prone to eat what’s in plain sight, so always provide nutrient rich options for them to grab.
Pecan Pie Oatmeal Bars
Kids love to help make this easy bar recipe; helping whisk ingredients is a safe and easy way to have them involved in the kitchen. A decent dose of heart healthy fats, proteins and fiber will keep them satisfied and fueled for all the summer fun!
