Want to take advantage of the sale but aren’t sure where to begin? Here are a few tips for enjoying cheese in a healthful way along with some tasty holiday gift ideas for your foodie friends.

Opt for full flavor

This year swap your mild cheeses for something a little stronger. Choosing a cheese that packs more of a flavor punch can be more satisfying to eat in smaller portions, which is a great reason to try something funkier. Whether you’re adding cheddar to a recipe or highlighting it as a stand-alone treat, you can savor more from a sharp variety or those with flavorful additions. Give Beehive Cheese Company’s many styles of promontory cheddar a try, along with the Poets and Writers Oscar Wilde 2 Year Aged Cheddar and the Cabot Seriously Sharp Cheddar Cheese.

The deep, nutty flavor of Parmigiano Reggiano is a smart way to infuse umami flavor into soups and salads without overloading the dish with cheese. You can get creative with the shredded, shaved, and grated options of parmesan and Parmigiano Reggiano, but remember that a little goes a long way. Harmons even prepares baked parmesan crisps

Low Fat Cheeses

Most cheeses contain moderate amounts of saturated fat, but there are a variety of cheeses that are naturally lower in fat. Next time you’re at the cheese island, give mozzarella, feta, Swiss, ricotta, or goat cheese a try. Harmons makes fresh mozzarella that pairs wonderfully with tomatoes, basil, and a sprinkle of flaked salt.

Feta and goat cheese brings tanginess to salads and are delicious when served chilled or baked with whole grain crackers. If you’re still warming up to cheese that’s on the tart side, give one of the many flavors of Laura Chenel goat cheese a try. Garlic and chive or orange blossom honey are just a few of the crowd-pleasing options. For those that savor deeper flavors, Cyprus Grove Truffle Tremor is another goat cheese option.

Come and enjoy the cheese festival with us by sampling different cheeses and learning from your local cheesemonger. If you have more questions about incorporating cheese into a healthy lifestyle, reach out to Harmons’ dietitian team at We’ll see you soon!
