Tier 3 Fuel FAQs

Harmons is pleased to announce that all 14 of its fuel stations now offer Tier 3 fuel exclusively. Tier 3 gasoline is cleaner, contains less sulfur, and creates less air pollution than non-Tier 3 gas. This means our gasoline is helping reduce harmful emissions which allows us all to breathe a little easier.

Tier 3 refers to a set of national standards developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that requires refineries to reduce the sulfur content in unleaded gasoline from an annual average of 30 parts per million (PPM) to 10 PPM. Tier 3 also includes efficiency standards for all cars model-year 2017 and newer. When used with fully compliant Tier 3 vehicles, this cleaner gas will reduce up to 80 percent of key auto emissions (NOx and VOC) that contribute to ozone and particulate pollution. Even cars manufactured before 2017 see a reduction of 12-15 percent of emissions which is pretty significant since older cars produce more emissions than newer cars.

What is Tier 3 fuel?

Tier 3 gasoline is cleaner, contains less sulfur, and creates less air pollution than non-Tier 3 gas. Is Tier 3 fuel better or worse for your engine?

Tier 3 standards do not impact engine performance. However, in addition to meeting Tier 3 standards, Harmons’ fuel is also “Top Tier” which is an industry performance standard related to gasoline detergent content. Top Tier gas is designed to produce less engine residue build-up and offer improved engine life and performance. This means you get the best of both worlds, better engine performance while producing fewer harmful emissions.

Why did Harmons make this shift?

Offering cleaner fuel helps reduce vehicle emissions that contribute to our inversion and protects the public health. At Harmons, our commitment to cleaner air is part of being a good neighbor and being part of the solution to the air quality issues that plague our community.

Harmons is part of a statewide effort to address air quality through its partnership with Utah Clean AIR Partnership (UCAIR). This is a local non-profit whose goal is to coordinate efforts to improve air quality through education, grants, and partnerships. These efforts go beyond providing Tier 3 fuel. All Harmons associates are offered steeply discounted UTA passes which help reduce the number of vehicles on the road. Harmons is also supporting the growing number of zero tailpipe emission electric vehicles by expanding the number of EV charging stations at its stores. Lastly, Harmons monitors the idling time of fleet vehicles and posts anti-idling signs in the eshop parking spaces and pharmacy drive throughs.
